SCALP MICRO-PIGMENTATION FAQ:
- WHAT IS SCALP MICRO-PIGMENTATION?
Scalp micro-pigmentation, or more commonly referred to as SMP, is a procedure that consist of using a single micro-needle to implant tiny pigment deposits into the scalp. The technician makes thousands upon thousands of these implantations in order to simulate the look of a full hair follicle. The end results are immediate, natural and undetectable. Scalp micro-pigmentation is without a doubt the fastest growing hair loss solution on the market today. The results are guaranteed and permanent.

It does not matter if the reason is aging, stress, hormones or a medical disorder that is causing the hair loss, everyone can benefit from this procedure. Even if you suffer from scars you would like to camouflage, scalp micro-pigmentation can easily take care of your needs.

- AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SCALP MICRO-PIGMENTATION?
The main requirements are to have healthy skin before-hand to ensure the best healing results possible. This is another reason why a consult is extremely important so the technician can give you a quote, make sure the canvas is healthy and if not, discuss possible solutions to help the client create a healthy canvas to be a good candidate for scalp micro-pigmentation.
- HOW DO I CHOOSE AN ARTIST?
When you preview an experienced artist portfolio the results should be undetectable. The pigment transplants should blend in seamlessly with the real hair follicles or appear like real hair follicles under the skin. All pigment transplants should be of the same size with no random “blowout” spots in the skin.. You should see no hues of blue or green in the work. Experience is key.
- WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PROCEDURE?
The results are immediate after the first procedure, even though there are typically three procedures and sometimes four or five depending on how extensive the hair loss is. The treatment has limitations. The procedure cannot give you your hair back, but it is one of the best hair loss solutions on the market. For women, the results tend to be a little different than male clients. The women cannot expect new hair growth, but they can expect a density procedure that camouflages scalp skin better, which tends to be the most common concern with female clients.
- WHAT IS THE TREATMENT PROCESS?
Consult: During your consult appointment, we discuss what your expectations are and what can be accomplished. We take a deposit for your first initial appointment and you leave with a full price quote for your scalp micro-pigmentation procedure. Initial procedure (Day 1): I start the process of the “first pass”. The “first pass” is the start of building your new hairline, and creating tiny hair dot “follicles” spaced out over the treatment area. Second procedure (Day 8): I start the process of the “second pass”. The “second pass” is exactly like the first procedure, except we are now building density now between all the previous hair “follicles” we created before. Third procedure (Day 16): You guessed it… the “third pass” is the same as the second procedure. We build more on density and put on the finishing touches. Note: Each session usually last between two and four hours.
- WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME?
Scalp micro-pigmentation does not require the same amount of healing time as other invasive tattoos. Due to the small micro-wounds created by a small single needle, you only need one week to heal in between procedures. You could have your entire procedure process done in less than one month’s time!
- CAN YOU CAMOUFLAGE SCARS FROM INJURIES OR SURGERY?
A mass majority of my clients have scars of some type, whether from injury or hair transplant surgery. Scar tissue is a little more complicated to work with, but it is definitely manageable for scar camouflage. We can discuss your needs further during our consult together.
- HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?
The most important action you would need to take before your appointment is making sure your scalp skin is healthy and ready to be tattooed. We will discuss your specific needs in your consult. Typically, the prep work consist of shaving, exfoliating, cleaning and hydrating the scalp skin.
- WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY CONSULT APPOINTMENT?
I encourage clients to bring personal photos before their hair loss started in order to give me a clear concept of what the original hair line looked like before. You should also be ready to make a deposit in order to secure your appointment for the procedure in the future.
- ARE CONSULTS FREE?
- CAN WOMEN ALSO BENEFIT FROM THIS PROCEDURE?
Women can benefit from this procedure as well, but it is not the same benefits that men receive. I cannot stimulate your body to grow loss hair follicles, but I can perform a density procedure that will camouflage the appearance of your scalp. Typically, with the help of this procedure, women will part their hair a certain way in order to make it appear as if their hair is thicker than it actually is.
- IS SCALP MICRO-PIGMENTATION PAINFUL?
With any tattoo you run the risk of discomfort and pain. Clients tend to experience mild discomfort at the start of the procedure as they adjust to the process. After they adjust, the procedure becomes much more tolerable. There are several areas of the scalp where clients might have increased sensitivity like the temples and neck line. I do everything I can in order to minimize discomfort and ease my client’s possible anxiety. I do have a topical anesthetic that I use if the pain becomes unbearable. Every client is different and every procedure is different. Most of my clients actually sleep during their appointments. You are also more than welcome to bring your phone or tablet device along with small ear buds to listen to music or even watch Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime if it helps distract you during the procedure. The needle used to perform the procedure is much smaller than traditional tattooing and the procedure is much less invasive.
- HOW LONG WILL THE FINAL RESULTS LAST?
Scalp micro-pigmentation is semi-permanent which means that it will fade slowly over a period of time. While the pigment will probably remain visible in the skin for twenty years or more, regular color boost and touch-ups are needed to keep your “hair” looking it’s very best. Most clients need color boost every five to seven years. For maximum longevity, it is important to keep the scalp in a healthy condition. It is mandatory that you keep your scalp cleansed and moisturized daily. Take caution when you are in the sun. Make sure to use a proper sunscreen to protect your work or wear a ball cap. You should also be cautious of topical products that are alcohol based since they are drying to the skin and could cause extreme fading.
- DO I NEED TO TOUCH-UP PROCEDURES IN THE FUTURE?
Color boost and touch-ups are not always required. Every single client is different. Over the course of time, the procedure will appear lighter and softer. Most clients choose to have a color boost procedure done after five to seven years, but again, this is based on client preference.
- I AM COMPLETELY BALD. CAN SCALP MICRO-PIGMENTATION WORK FOR ME?
Most definitely!! Being completely bald actually makes you a prime candidate for scalp micro-pigmentation.
- DO I NEED TO SHAVE MY HEAD?
I do ask a majority of my male clients to shave their head two days prior to their procedure. The reason I ask you to shave your head is when the hair is not short or long enough it could possibly wrap around my needle causing the hair to be ripped out. I do not typically ask my female clients to shave their head or male clients who have hair longer than four inches because I can part the hair off to the side and hold it down to tattoo around the natural hair follicles.
- I HAVE SEEN SOME SCALP MICRO-PIGMENTATION PROCEDURES THAT FADE INTO BLUE AND GREEN OVER THE COURSE OF TIME. WILL THAT HAPPEN TO MY SCALP MICRO-PIGMENTATION TOO?
I can only speak for myself and my work. I cannot speak for other artist, their skill or their products they use. I personally do not use any products that have blue or green hues to cause this discoloring affect in the skin.
- ARE THERE ANY COMMON SIDE EFFECTS?
The side effects of the procedure are extremely minimal. Most clients experience slight redness directly after the procedure, but it subsides with in the first two days, if not less. As always, if you have any underlying scalp conditions, you should consult with your primary care physician or dermatologist before you proceed with this procedure.
- WHAT POST TREATMENT CARE SHOULD I FOLLOW?
After each one of your sessions I will send you home with a post treatment care sheet to help with your healing process and we will discuss the after care in full detail together to make sure you understand.
- WHAT IF I WANT TO CONCEAL MY IDENITY IN BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS?
I give my clients media and photography waivers to sign, but you have every right not to sign the waiver. If you choose not to sign the waiver, I will simply blur or crop your face out of the photo in order to conceal your identity. I completely understand the sensitivity of the subject at hand. I have clients from all different walks of life. Some are excited to share their experience with everyone they meet and some choose to never talk about it at all, but just stand a little taller with the new confidence I have helped them find. The choice is completely up to you!
- WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENTS DO YOU ACCEPT?
I have a Square card reader and can accept all major debit and credit cards. I also accept cash. I do not accept checks.

- I LIVE OUT OF STATE, WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR A CONSULT?
I do have many clients who live out of state, and I understand it is difficult to drive or fly back and forth every single week for three weeks in order to see me for your procedure. If you would like to have a consult with me via Face Time or Skype, I can arrange that the same as I would for my local clients.
